Steven Yeun Isn’t Playing Sentry in Marvel’s Thunderbolts Anymore

The entertainment world was taken by surprise when news broke that Steven Yeun, best known for his roles in “Invincible” and “The Walking Dead,” exited Marvel Studios’ upcoming “Thunderbolts” movie. This departure is a significant development in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), as Yeun was anticipated to play a crucial role in the film.

Yeun, whose work spans various genres and has garnered significant acclaim, was expected to portray the superhero character Robert Reynolds, also known as Sentry, in “Thunderbolts.” Sentry, described as a deranged and incredibly powerful character, was set to be an integral part of the team for the first two acts of the movie before being dramatically removed from the narrative. This role would have marked a significant addition to Yeun’s already impressive career, which includes voice acting for the character Mark Grayson/Invincible in the Prime Video series “Invincible”.

The production of “Thunderbolts” has faced delays, primarily due to the Hollywood strikes, which subsequently led to scheduling conflicts for Yeun. These conflicts ultimately resulted in his decision to leave the project. The departure of Yeun has left Marvel Studios in search of a new actor to fill the substantial role of Sentry, a task that is likely to be challenging given the character’s complexity and importance in the film.

“Thunderbolts” is shaping up to be a unique addition to the MCU, featuring a team composed of antiheroes and villains who reluctantly work for the government. The film’s cast includes a roster of notable characters such as Florence Pugh as Yelena Belova, Sebastian Stan as Bucky Barnes/Winter Soldier, David Harbour as Red Guardian, Julia Louis-Dreyfus as Valentina Allegra de Fontaine, Wyatt Russell as John Walker/U.S. Agent, Hannah John-Kamen as Ava Starr/Ghost, Olga Kurylenko as Taskmaster, and Harrison Ford as Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross. The film, directed by Jake Schreier and scripted by Eric Pearson and Kurt Busiek, is set for release in theaters on July 25, 2025.

Steven Yeun’s exit from “Thunderbolts” is a notable event in the ongoing evolution of the MCU. His involvement in the project had been a topic of much excitement among fans, and his departure will undoubtedly influence the direction and casting choices for the film. As Marvel continues to expand its cinematic universe, the anticipation for “Thunderbolts” remains high, and the industry eagerly awaits news of who will step into the role of Sentry.
